“Evolution” is a sonic map of identity shaped by self-exploration. The album combines Greek bouzouki and piano with instruments from Niokos’ musical education, including flute and saxophone. By blending folk rhythms like the Kalamatianos with ancient Byzantine scales such as Sabbah and Hijaz, it reflects the experience of a child of Greek immigrants in Toronto, bridging two cultures through music.
The album features ancient Greek folk rhythms and traditional dances such as the Kalamatianós and Zembéki. Classical and Jazz training bring flair, precision, and harmonic depth, unifying these elements in a contemporary way.
This work boldly synthesizes diverse influences. Eastern Mediterranean modes such as Sabbah and Hijaz are woven into modern arrangements with intricate rhythms and vibrant instrumentation. “Evolution” is a personal testament to cultural synthesis, blending ancient rhythms, expansive melodies, and modern harmonies to reveal the beauty where heritage meets the present.
